LocalFind a roommate

January 1, 2017

The cost of living continues to go up in Seattle. This means that rents are high. How can someone afford to pay these high rents? Get a roommate.
The Seattle Times recently studied population information. It found that 70,000 or 12.5% of adults in the city had a roommate in 2015. That may not seem like a lot, but it is an increase of 39% since 2010. Now Seattle is the number 1 roommate city among the 50 biggest cities in the United States.
Sharing rent with a roommate saves money. The rent for a two-bedroom apartment is more than a one-bedroom apartment. However, when two or more people split the rent, it amounts to a lot less than a one-bedroom apartment. The savings for roommates on average in Seattle is $428 a month. And when a boyfriend or girlfriend share a one-bedroom apartment, the couple saves money because they don’t need to pay for an extra bedroom.
The high cost of living hasn’t changed the number of people living by themselves, however. In 2015, 118,000 lived by themselves. That number has stayed about the same for ten years. People living alone pay higher rent, but they have the freedom to do what they want to do.
