Emojis are changing Internet communication. Emojis are the little yellow faces or other symbols on smartphones or other devices. They add emotion to a text message and are attracting many users, especially the young.

In the U.S. 74% of all Internet users add emojis to their text messages. However, for young people under 25 years old, the number of users jumps to almost 100%. A report in December said that 8 trillion text messages are sent each year.

When people talk to each other, words are only 30% of communication. People look at faces, gestures, and body language to interpret messages. Now emojis can add similar information to text.

For example, a text message reads: “I’m coming tomorrow.” However, the true meaning of these words become clear with an emoji at the end. A person could choose a smiley face with tears of joy (the most popular emoji), or a smiley face with heart eyes, or a smiling face with smiling eyes. However, the text may also show the opposite, a sad or disappointed face. People have hundreds of emojis to choose from to express their feelings by text.

Shigetaka Kurita created the first emojis in Japan in the 1990s. The word, “emoji” sounds close to the English word “emotion”, but it actually means pictograph in Japanese.
