Santa’s lead reindeer, Rudolph, is famous for his shiny red nose. But Rudolph is only a story. Real reindeer don’t have red noses, but their eyes do something unusual. They change color from gold to blue every year. This is surprising new information.

Reindeer live in the Arctic. Biologists at the University of Norway say, “Reindeer eyes have to adapt to seasons of light and dark in the Arctic.”

Gold eye color helps reindeer see clearly in the bright summer light when the sun never sets. But, in winter it is near dark all the time. Reindeer open their eyes to let in as much light as possible. This action causes changes to reindeer eyes, and they turn blue.
