Malala Yousafzai, 17, is the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner. She says, “One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first.” People are listening to her powerful message.
In 2009, Malala was happily attending school in Mingora, Pakistan. But then the Taliban, the new leaders in the area, said, “You cannot come to school any more. You are a girl.”
Malala thought that this rule was unjust. She did not stop coming to school. Sadly, on October 12, someone from the Taliban shot her in the head. She almost died. World news reports quickly spread Malala’s shocking story. People admired her courage. She became famous.
Today Malala is safely going to school in Birmingham, Britain. She also gives speeches, raises money for girls’ education, and talks to world leaders. She wrote her story, “I am Malala.” And on December 10, 2014, she will receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. She is the youngest Nobel Prize winner ever.
Sixty-six million girls around the world do not have an education. Malala says to them and all of us, “I speak not for myself but for those without a voice…their right to be educated.”
