Kailash Satyarthi speaking at the Global Campaign for Education World Assembly in Paris

Kailash Satyarthi, 60, is a hero to poor children in India. He has saved 83,000 from slavery! Now people around the world are learning about him and his mission. He along with Pakistani Malala Yousafzai are the 2014 Nobel Peace winners.

Satyarthi’s home country of India has one of the worst records in the world on child labor. Estimates indicate that out of the 50 million working children there, 10 million are working as slaves. Often poor parents sell their children into bondage because they have debts that they cannot pay.

As a young man of 30 in the 1980s, this terrible injustice against children moved Satyarthi to action. He quit his career in electrical engineering and started Save the Childhood Mission (Bachpan Bachao Andolan).

Over the years, Satyarthi has developed a successful strategy to rescue children. He and members of Bachpan Bachao Andolan raid workplaces and factories that use child slave labor to make bricks, weave carpets, or produce other goods. They free suffering children who are sometimes as young as five or six.

Satyarthi also talks to officials and parents about the evils of child labor. Many argue that children must work because they are poor. But Satyarthi has persuaded about 300 villages in 11 different states to stop forcing children to work.

Satyarthi uses actions such as The Global March against Child Labor to focus the world attention on child labor. And now with the recognition of the Nobel Peace Prize, his message will reach even more people.
