Nelson Mandela died on December 5th, 2013. He was a great man, but he had a long walk to freedom.

He was born on July 18th, 1918, in South Africa.  At that time his country was divided into black and white. Mandela became a lawyer, and he started to fight for equality for black people. The white government did not like this. It said, “Mandela, you are a terrorist.” He went to prison in June 1963 for 27 years.

Finally in 1990 Mandela, age 71, was set free. He had a hard time in prison, but left his anger behind.

In December 1993, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Then, in May 1994, prisoner 46664, became the first black president of South Africa. He brought his country together, both blacks and whites.

Madiba is a name of respect for Nelson Mandela. Thank you, Madiba. You are a hero forever.
