This is the Elwha River in Olympic National Park. Soon it will look very different. The National Park Service is removing two old dams. This will take from 2 to 3 years. After that, the Elwha River will run free again from mountains to ocean. This is good news for salmon. The dams stopped them from swimming up the river to spawn (lay eggs). 100 years ago, 400,000 salmon lived in the Elwha River. Today there are only 3,000. The return of the salmon will bring back life to the river. This will make native plants, animals, and people happy.
